Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre or "Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del Cobre " is a popular Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary known in many Catholic countries. Several known Marian images with the same title exist around the world while a particular Hispanic image is pontifically designated by Pope Benedict XV as the Patroness of Cuba. A National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre was built in 1926 is situated in village El Cobre, near Santiago de Cuba. Pope Pius XI granted the Basilica a Canonical Coronical towards the image on 20 December 1936. The feast day of Our Lady of Charity is September 8; the solemn Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Tis beautiful Basilica sits on the hill overlooking the town of El Cobre, which in Spanish means Copper in the area around Santiago de Cuba and is one of the most impressive structures on the entire island. El Cobre is surrounded by copper mines and it is just amazing to see this beautiful structure that has been risen out of the top of the hill.
