Marques de Cuba Habanero: "El Ron Prohibido"

Fraternity Spirits World announced they were offering their new prohibition rum, "Marques de Cuba Habanero".   This is a rum is that originated in Mexico during the 1700's.   Large numbers of barrels filled with Spanish sweet wine arrived in the new world , after the wine was depleted,  the barrels would be refilled with high quality Mexican produced rum and sent back to Spain.

Tequilera Corralejo produces the new rum offering, "Marques De Cuba Habanero ‘El Ron Prohibido’". By the year 1700, Spanish ships were arriving in the colonies of the New World loaded with products from Spain. One popular product was sweet wine stored in barrels, which were later emptied after use. These empty barrels were filled with "Chinguirito", which is rum that was produced in Mexico, and shipped back to Spain."

As the rum aged in the sweet wine barrels during the trip back to Spain, it absorbed wood flavors and aroma from the sweet wine barrels, which gave it very special characteristics. The resulting rum became very popular in Spain.   "Chinguirito" was also known as Habanero because the last stop on the way back to Spain from the New World was Habana, Cuba.

The kick-off for "Marques de Cuba Habanero" will be at the TFWA(Tax Free World Association) World Exhibition in Cannes from October 20 to 25.  This is a show for "Duty Free and Travel Retail Premium" vendors.   There are several other spirits producers that will be having a kick-off for their newest spirits at the event.

I'm looking forward to my next trip to the Caribbean in December and a chance to pick up a bottle of this unique rum at one of the "Duty Free" Shops at the airports.  ;o)

  1. This is sure to have very unique properties. Chinguirito, as best I can tell, is the Mexican word for "aguardiente". Aguardiente (translated "fire water") is the stuff that Cubans made, before Bacardi perfected the rum-making process using coal filtration. The reason I said it's sure to be unique, is because Chinguirito loosely translates to "something that will F you up". I can't help but draw a parallel to your root juice, the way it starts out as "ron puro" but mellows out with time. Do let us know what you think!

    1. I agree, This is a product of Mexico, and should be legally available to Americans, and the idea of taking "Agurdiente", and aging it in sweet Spanish wine casks has my interest. I'll be out in the Caribbean in December, and when I find a bottle, I'll be letting everyone know what it is really like. Maybe like my "bark juice". ;o)

    2. Thankfully I'm English, so not a problem getting this into Hong Kong (where I've lived many years). Having just come back from Tulum, Mexico, it was a true delight to receive a bottle of El Ron Prohibido and we made a dent in it at a recent bbq. I thought it must have been made with molasses, as the taste was very deep and sweet, so thanks for pointing out some historical facts, Bob!

    3. I just got a bottle of "El Ron Prohibido" from Mexico. What a great rum, unlike any other I have tasted. I usually drink hard liquor in a 3 shot glass with an ice cube, not this rum though. I find ice usually helps to bring out some flavours of scotch but this rum, for me, is best enjoyed straight up with no ice. An incredible rum with a dark colour, great nose, superb mouth feel, awesome taste, nice warm feeling and great after taste. In short, this rum provides everything I am looking for in a high quality rum.
