The Special Problem of Converting the Bahia Honda Trestle

The Days of the Train
When the time came o convert the Bahia Honda trestle to a highway bridge there were several problems that had to be overcome.  The structure of the bridge meant that it could not be taken apart and just lay the reinforced concrete beams on the old road way.  The structural integrity of the bridge would be lost.  Therefore the roadway had to be laid down on top of the structure.  There was a problem there as well.  The hump in the center rose to fast to just follow the shape of the bridge, so it had to be gradually ramping up to the peak and back down.

Looking at the Deteriorating Roadway Today.
